About Dampier
Dampier is a major industrial port in the northwest
of Western Australia, located just 20 kilometres
west of Karratha. The Dampier Port is part of the
Dampier Archipelago. The Dampier port services
petrochemical, salt, iron ore and natural gas
export industries. Rio Tinto exports large volumes
of iron ore through the port. At the 2011 census,
Dampier had a population of 1,341.
Dampier is the largest tonnage shipping port in
Australia and houses the massive export facilities
of Hamersley Iron, Dampier Salt and the North
West Gas Shelf Project.
