About Somerset
Somerset is a small township to the west of
Burnie, Tasmania, Australia. Today the city of
Burnie encompasses the entire Burnie-
Somerset urban area; however, the town is part
of the Waratah/Wynyard municipal area.
The township of Somerset is located only 6km
west of Burnie on the Cam River.
In recent years the township has grown in
popularity bringing more local residents and
industrial developments.
Somerset is an attractive resort town with wide
beaches and a more than adequate shopping
centre. As this popular residential area of
Tasmania expands Burnie, Cooee and Somerset
are becoming one major regional city.
Somerset is on the Cam River.
Its strategic location at the junction of the Bass
Hwy to Smithton and the north west, and the
Murchison Hwy to Queenstown and the west
coast make it a popular stopover for travellers
along both highways.
At Somerset there is an extensive beach and an
attractive foreshore and development has seen
large industry in the town including plywood
mills and a large freezing and canning factory.
There are several hotels and motels and a
caravan park.
